50 Diwali AI Photo Prompts to Try This Festive Season
Last Diwali I spent 40 minutes trying to get one decent photo in front of our diyas, and the flames kept blowing out while my face sat in shadow. This year I made 30 festive portraits in the time it took the chai to boil. That shift is what these diwali ai photo prompts are for: you bring one good photo of your face, the model brings the diyas, the marigold, the bokeh lights and the studio gold, and you keep the parts that matter.
Diwali 2026 falls around November 8, so the window to plan a shoot, pick outfits and post before the festival is short. I would rather you spend that time choosing looks than wrestling with lighting. Below are 50 prompts I actually tested, grouped by the look you want, plus the exact phone steps and the small lines that stop your face from drifting into a stranger.
One honest opinion before we start: most "AI photo" results online look plastic because people paste a one-line prompt and accept the first render. The prompts here name the fabric, the light source and the lens on purpose. That specificity is the whole difference between a photo you post and a photo you quietly delete.
How to make a Diwali AI photo in 5 steps
You make a Diwali AI photo by uploading your picture to an image model, pasting a detailed Diwali prompt, and downloading the version you like. The full flow takes about two minutes on a phone, and both apps I recommend are free to start.
Step one: open Google Gemini or ChatGPT on your phone or browser. If Gemini is new to you, my walkthrough on how to use Google Gemini covers sign-in and the image button in a couple of minutes.
Step two: upload one clear, front-facing photo of yourself in good light, with your whole face visible and no sunglasses. The sharper your input, the better the model holds your identity.
Step three: paste a prompt from this guide. Keep the line that says to preserve your face, skin tone and features, because that single instruction is what keeps the output recognisable as you.
Step four: set the aspect ratio. Ask for 4:5 or 3:4 for a feed portrait, 9:16 for a story, or 1:1 for a profile picture. On Gemini and ChatGPT you can just write the ratio into the prompt.
Step five: generate, then regenerate two or three times and download the best frame. Picking good inputs and reading the result like a photographer matters more than the app you choose, a point I made in my roundup of the best AI image generators this year.
A quick word on prompt craft: name the subject, the outfit, the setting, the light and the camera, in that order. If you want to understand why that order works across any model, my guide on how to write a perfect ChatGPT prompt breaks down the same structure I use below.
Traditional diya and rangoli portrait prompts
These six prompts put you in classic Diwali surroundings: rows of clay diyas, a colourful rangoli and the warm glow that makes the festival photograph so well. I lean warm and soft here, never harsh, because diya light is the entire mood.
Prompt 1. Create a warm portrait of me sitting on the floor beside a freshly lit row of clay diyas, wearing a deep maroon traditional outfit, a bright rangoli in front of me, soft golden flame light on my face, shallow depth of field, 50mm lens look, cosy festive mood. Keep the same face, skin tone and features. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 2. Place me standing at a decorated home doorway during Diwali, holding a single brass diya in both hands, marigold torans framing the door, warm amber light from below, gentle bokeh of fairy lights behind me, realistic skin texture. Keep my face exactly the same. Portrait 3:4.
Prompt 3. Generate a close portrait of me lighting a diya with a small flame, face lit softly by the glowing wick, dark background with floating golden bokeh, intimate and calm expression, cinematic warm tones, sharp eyes. Preserve my identity, skin tone and features. Square 1:1.
Prompt 4. Show me kneeling beside a large circular rangoli made of red, orange and white petals, diyas placed around the pattern, soft overhead daylight mixed with warm flame glow, festive sari or kurta, candid downward glance. Keep the same face and features. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 5. Create an overhead-friendly portrait of me surrounded by dozens of diyas arranged in spirals, seated cross-legged in traditional wear, warm light pooling across the floor, rich shadows, National Geographic festival feel, natural skin. Keep my face unchanged. Portrait 3:4.
Prompt 6. Make a photo of me on a rooftop at dusk with a tray of lit diyas, the city glowing faintly behind, warm key light on my face, deep blue sky fading to orange, relaxed festive smile, realistic grain. Keep the same face, skin tone and features. Story ratio 9:16.
Saree and lehenga festive look prompts (women)
Diwali is the one time a heavy saree or a mirror-work lehenga feels exactly right. These seven prompts style the outfit as carefully as the setting. If you want a full outfit-focused set after this, my list of AI saree photo prompts goes deeper on drape, blouse and jewellery detail.
Prompt 7. Create a portrait of me in a rich red Banarasi silk saree with gold zari border, matching gold jhumkas and a maang tikka, standing near a diya-lit console table, warm indoor light, soft bokeh of fairy lights, elegant posture. Keep the same face, skin tone and features. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 8. Place me in an emerald green georgette saree with sequin work, hair in a low bun with gajra, holding a sparkler, warm night background with golden bokeh, gentle glow on my face, graceful half-turn toward the camera. Preserve my identity and features. Portrait 3:4.
Prompt 9. Generate a photo of me in a royal blue lehenga with heavy mirror work and a dupatta draped over one shoulder, standing in a marigold-decorated courtyard, warm late-afternoon light, candid laughing expression, shallow depth of field. Keep my face exactly the same. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 10. Show me in a pastel peach organza saree with delicate floral embroidery, seated beside a window with diyas on the sill, soft diffused daylight, minimal jewellery, serene and modern festive look, realistic skin texture. Keep the same face and features. Square 1:1.

Prompt 12. Make a photo of me in a classic white and gold Kerala-style saree, fresh jasmine in my hair, standing beside a brass lamp (nilavilakku) with lit wicks, warm flame light, calm devotional mood, soft shadows. Keep my face unchanged. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 13. Generate a full-length shot of me in a wine-coloured velvet lehenga with heavy embellishment, twirling gently so the skirt flares, fairy-light bokeh filling the background, warm cinematic light, joyful expression, 35mm lens look. Keep the same face and features. Story ratio 9:16.
Kurta and sherwani look prompts (men)
Men get a thin selection of festive AI prompts online, so I built these six to actually fit the occasion, from a simple cotton kurta to a full wedding-season sherwani. In my opinion a well-lit kurta shot beats an over-styled one every time.
Prompt 14. Create a portrait of me in a cream silk kurta with a Nehru jacket and a pocket square, standing beside a row of diyas on a staircase, warm indoor light, soft bokeh behind, relaxed hands and a slight smile, realistic skin. Keep the same face, skin tone and features. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 15. Place me in a deep navy sherwani with subtle gold embroidery and a matching stole, standing in a marigold-decorated hall, warm key light, shallow depth of field, dignified posture, cinematic festive mood. Preserve my identity and features. Portrait 3:4.
Prompt 16. Generate a photo of me in a maroon bandhgala with a brooch, holding a brass diya, warm flame glow lighting my face from below, dark elegant background with golden bokeh, confident expression. Keep my face exactly the same. Square 1:1.

Prompt 18. Create a portrait of me in a black sherwani with silver detailing and a safa (turban), standing under hanging fairy lights, warm golden glow, strong jawline lighting, wedding-season formality, sharp eyes. Preserve my face, skin tone and features. Portrait 3:4.
Prompt 19. Make a photo of me in a pastel-green linen kurta, sleeves rolled up, lighting a diya on a rooftop at dusk, city lights blurred behind, warm rim light on my hair, calm and modern festive look. Keep my face unchanged. Story ratio 9:16.
Family and couple Diwali photo prompts
The photos people actually frame are the group ones. These six prompts handle couples and families, and they work best when you upload a group photo or clearly describe each person. I think a slightly candid family shot ages far better than a stiff, posed one.
Prompt 20. Create a warm Diwali portrait of a couple in coordinated outfits, her in a red saree, him in a cream kurta, standing close beside a row of diyas, soft golden light, fairy-light bokeh behind, genuine smiles, shallow depth of field. Keep both faces, skin tones and features the same. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 21. Place a family of four in festive traditional wear, seated together around a large rangoli with lit diyas, warm indoor light, everyone looking relaxed and happy, candid natural expressions, realistic skin texture. Preserve each person's face and features. Landscape-friendly 4:3.

Prompt 25. Make a candid family photo of everyone laughing mid-moment while arranging diyas on the floor, warm cosy home light, traditional outfits in a coordinated palette, natural grain, documentary festive feel. Keep all faces unchanged. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Kids Diwali look prompts
Children in festive wear are the easiest way to get a photo the whole family forwards. These six prompts keep the mood sweet and the light gentle, never harsh on little faces. Upload the child's photo and keep the preserve-face line in every one.
Prompt 26. Create an adorable portrait of a young child in a tiny red kurta with gold detailing, holding a small unlit diya, sitting beside a soft rangoli, warm gentle light, big curious eyes, cosy festive background with soft bokeh. Keep the same face and features. Square 1:1.

Fireworks and night sky backdrop prompts
Fireworks are where AI genuinely beats a phone camera, because real festival smoke and crowds rarely cooperate. These six prompts give you clean night skies and controlled sparks. I would keep the fireworks soft and distant so your face stays the hero.
Prompt 32. Create a portrait of me on a rooftop with soft golden fireworks bursting high in the night sky behind me, warm rim light on my face, festive outfit, shallow depth of field so the fireworks are gentle bokeh, cinematic tones. Keep the same face, skin tone and features. Portrait 3:4.
Prompt 33. Place me holding a bright sparkler at arm's length, the sparks lighting my face warmly, dark night background with distant soft firework glows, festive traditional wear, joyful expression, realistic motion. Preserve my identity and features. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 34. Generate a wide shot of me standing on a terrace watching colourful fireworks over a glowing city skyline, warm and cool light mixing on my face, calm wonder, cinematic scale, sharp foreground. Keep my face exactly the same. Story ratio 9:16.
Prompt 35. Show me in a festive outfit with a ring of soft golden sparks framing me, slight lens flare, deep blue night sky, warm key light, confident pose, dreamy festive atmosphere. Keep the same face and features. Square 1:1.

Prompt 37. Make a dramatic portrait of me under a sky full of distant fireworks reflected faintly in a calm pool of water beside me, warm glow on my face, serene expression, cinematic reflection, soft grain. Keep my face unchanged. Portrait 3:4.
Luxe golden studio prompts
When you want a magazine-cover feel rather than a home scene, a clean studio set with gold tones does the job. These six prompts drop the clutter and let the outfit and light carry the frame. My honest take: one strong studio portrait outperforms ten busy backgrounds.
Prompt 38. Create a studio portrait of me in a festive outfit against a warm gold gradient backdrop, soft beauty-dish lighting, a few diyas glowing in the foreground bokeh, polished editorial look, flawless yet realistic skin. Keep the same face, skin tone and features. Portrait 3:4.
Prompt 39. Place me in a richly embroidered outfit under dramatic Rembrandt studio lighting, deep warm shadows, a single diya flame as a foreground accent, luxurious magazine-cover mood, sharp detail. Preserve my identity and features. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 40. Generate a half-body portrait of me with a shimmering gold bokeh backdrop, soft key light and a subtle hair light, festive jewellery catching the glow, confident editorial expression, clean and premium. Keep my face exactly the same. Square 1:1.
Prompt 41. Show me seated on an ornate carved chair in festive wear, warm spotlight from above, dark luxurious studio background, regal posture, cinematic contrast, realistic texture on the fabric. Keep the same face and features. Portrait 3:4.
Prompt 42. Create a high-fashion Diwali portrait of me surrounded by floating golden light particles, warm rim lighting, elegant outfit, dramatic yet soft shadows, premium beauty-editorial finish. Preserve my face, skin tone and features. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 43. Make a minimalist studio shot of me holding a single glowing diya close to my face, warm flame as the only key light, pure dark background, intimate and artistic, fine detail on the eyes. Keep my face unchanged. Square 1:1.
Regional festive style prompts
Diwali looks different across India, and leaning into a regional style makes a photo feel specific rather than generic. These seven prompts borrow from several traditions. Treat them as starting points and swap the region to match your own family.
Prompt 44. Create a portrait of me in a South Indian Kanjivaram silk saree with a wide contrast border and temple jewellery, standing beside a brass lamp with lit wicks and a kolam on the floor, warm flame light, graceful posture. Keep the same face, skin tone and features. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 45. Place me in a Bengali-style red and white saree with a bold bindi and traditional gold, warm festive indoor light, diyas and alpana patterns around me, serene expression, realistic skin. Preserve my identity and features. Portrait 3:4.
Prompt 46. Generate a photo of me in a Rajasthani-style lehenga with heavy mirror and gota work, a maang tikka and layered necklaces, standing in a courtyard lit by lanterns and diyas, warm golden light, confident pose. Keep my face exactly the same. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Prompt 47. Show me in a Gujarati-style chaniya choli with intricate embroidery and oxidised jewellery, mid dandiya-ready twirl, warm festive bokeh, joyful energy, flowing fabric, cinematic light. Keep the same face and features. Story ratio 9:16.

Tips to make your Diwali AI photos look real
The gap between a believable Diwali portrait and an obvious fake comes down to a handful of choices. I learned most of these by generating the same prompt ten times and comparing what broke.
Start with a clean input photo. One sharp, evenly lit, front-facing image beats five blurry ones, because the model builds your face from what you give it.
Always name the light source. Writing "warm diya flame light from below" or "soft golden-hour glow" tells the model where shadows fall, and shadows are what make skin read as real.
Add a lens cue. Phrases like "50mm lens look" and "shallow depth of field" push the model toward a photographic rendering instead of an illustrated one.
Ask for realistic skin texture. The word "realistic" plus "natural skin" fights the plastic, over-smoothed finish that screams AI. If a result still looks waxy, regenerate rather than settle.
Keep the identity line in every prompt. "Keep the same face, skin tone and features" is the single most important sentence, and dropping it is the fastest way to end up looking like a cousin you have never met.
For a retro twist on the same technique, the approach I used for 80s and 90s AI photo prompts applies here too: lock the era, the film look and the light, then let the face stay yours.
Mistakes that ruin a Diwali AI photo
Most bad festive AI photos fail for the same few reasons, and all of them are easy to avoid once you know the pattern.
Over-saturated gold. Cranking the warmth until everything glows orange looks fake fast. Ask for "warm but balanced tones" instead of piling on the gold.
Too many light sources. Diyas, fireworks, fairy lights and a studio key all in one frame confuse the model and flatten your face. Pick one hero light and let the rest sit as soft bokeh.
Editing the first result instead of regenerating. When a face drifts, people try to fix it with follow-up edits, which usually makes it worse. Change the prompt and generate fresh.
Vague outfit descriptions. "Nice traditional dress" gives you a random costume. Name the garment, the colour and the fabric, like "deep maroon Banarasi silk saree with gold zari".
Ignoring aspect ratio. A square crop of a full-length lehenga wastes the outfit. Match the ratio to the pose: 9:16 for full-length, 4:5 for half-body, 1:1 for a headshot.
A note on why results vary
Two people can paste the identical prompt and get different photos, and that is normal. Image models add randomness on every run, your input photo quality shifts the outcome, and each app updates its model quietly, so the Gemini result in November may differ from the one in January.
Treat every prompt as a recipe, not a guarantee. Generate three or four times, change one detail at a time, and keep the frame that holds your face best. The prompts here are a strong starting point, and the model does the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which app should I use for Diwali AI photos, Gemini or ChatGPT?
Both work, and both are free to start. In my testing across dozens of festive portraits, Google Gemini with its Nano Banana image model held my face most consistently, while ChatGPT was slightly better at following long, detailed outfit instructions. Try the same prompt in both and keep the winner.
Are these Diwali AI photo prompts really free?
Yes. Gemini and ChatGPT both generate images on their free tiers, with daily limits that are generous enough for a full Diwali shoot of 20 to 30 images. You only need a paid plan if you want higher volume or faster queueing during peak festival days around November 8, 2026.
How do I keep my face the same across every photo?
Upload one sharp, front-facing photo and include the line "keep the same face, skin tone and features" in every prompt. Regenerate instead of editing when the face drifts. One clean input image does more for consistency than any other single factor.
What is the best aspect ratio for a Diwali photo?
Use 4:5 or 3:4 for Instagram feed portraits, 9:16 for WhatsApp and Instagram stories, and 1:1 for a profile picture or WhatsApp display photo. Match the ratio to the pose: full-length outfits want 9:16, headshots want 1:1.
Can I make a Diwali couple or family photo?
Yes. Upload a group photo or describe each person's outfit, then ask the model to place everyone around a diya-lit setting in a coordinated colour palette. Prompts 20 to 25 above are built for exactly this, and candid group shots tend to look more natural than stiff posed ones.
Why does my Diwali AI photo look fake or plastic?
Usually because the prompt skipped skin texture and lens cues, or piled on too much gold. Add "realistic skin texture", "50mm lens look" and "warm but balanced tones", pick one main light source, and regenerate. Harsh, over-saturated lighting is the number one giveaway.
Can I use these prompts for a saree-specific shoot?
Absolutely. Prompts 7 to 13 cover saree and lehenga looks, and for a deeper outfit-first set you can pair them with a dedicated saree prompt library to vary the drape, blouse and jewellery across a whole series.
