Generative AI Course Free With Certificate: 9 Options Checked for 2026

Satvik ParamkushamUpdated October 5, 202612 min read

Quick answer

For a generative AI course that is free with a certificate, start with Google's Introduction to Generative AI (free skill badge), then IBM SkillsBuild's generative AI credentials or Hugging Face's AI Agents Course, whose certificates are free. Microsoft's Generative AI for Beginners is excellent but has no certificate, and DeepLearning.AI certificates need a paid Pro plan.

Generative AI courses have multiplied faster than any other kind of AI course, and the word "free" now covers very different deals. Some give you a free badge for a 45-minute video. Some give you 21 lessons of real code and no certificate at all. Some show you the videos for free and charge for the quizzes, labs and certificate.

This page compares the main free generative AI courses on what matters: what you actually learn (concepts, prompting, RAG, agents), whether the certificate is free, and how much coding you need. If you are not sure what generative AI covers yet, our five-minute explainer on what generative AI is will make every course below easier to judge.

What should a free generative AI course teach you?

A good generative AI course should take you from how models work to building something useful with them. Use this checklist to judge any course, free or paid:

  1. How LLMs work: tokens, training, why outputs vary, and why models hallucinate.
  2. Prompting: role, context, examples and output format, covered in our guide to prompt engineering.
  3. Working with your own data: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), embeddings and vector search.
  4. Agents and tools: how AI agents plan, call tools and where they fail.
  5. Responsible use: bias, privacy, copyright and checking output before you rely on it.

No single free course covers all five well. The usual pattern is one short course for concepts and a credential, plus one hands-on course for building.

Which free generative AI course fits your goal?

Pick by what you want to do after the course, and how much code you are comfortable with:

9 free generative AI courses, and which ones give a certificate

How we chose: we checked each course's official page, FAQ or repository in October 2026 for four things: whether the lessons are free, whether the certificate is free, the coding level, and what the course actually teaches. If an official page did not confirm a certificate, we say "check" rather than guess. Courses run from no-code to developer level, and the order reflects how we would sequence them for a beginner in India.

  1. 1. Google Skills: Introduction to Generative AI, then LLMs

    Provider:
    Google Cloud
    Price:
    Free
    Certificate:
    Free skill badges
    Level:
    Beginner, no coding
    Duration:
    About 2 hours for both

The fastest free route to a generative AI credential from a big name. Do Introduction to Generative AI first (Google lists it at about 45 minutes), then Introduction to Large Language Models (about an hour). Both are marked no charge by Google and each awards a skill badge. If you work with images, Introduction to AI Image Generation adds a third.

Why it is first: in under two hours you get the vocabulary every other course on this page assumes.

The catch: these are concept courses with no coding, so the badges show you understand generative AI, not that you can build with it. Follow them with a hands-on course from this list.

  2. 2. IBM SkillsBuild generative AI credentials

    Provider:
    IBM SkillsBuild
    Price:
    Free
    Certificate:
    Free digital credentials
    Level:
    Beginner to intermediate
    Duration:
    3 to 4 hours each

The best free option if you want several short generative AI credentials that you can share on LinkedIn. IBM SkillsBuild, which describes itself as 100% free learning, lists Getting Started with Generative AI (3 hours), then follow-ups such as Craft Precise Prompts for AI Models, Generative AI Essentials: Using LLMs to Work with Data, Retrieval-Augmented Generation for Enhanced AI Outputs and Make Agentic AI Work for You (about 4 hours each).

Who it suits: students and non-technical professionals who want a clear progression from basics to RAG and agents, with a credential at each step.

The catch: examples use IBM tools such as Granite models, and you need a registered SkillsBuild account to earn the credentials.

  3. 3. Hugging Face AI Agents Course

    Provider:
    Hugging Face
    Price:
    Free
    Certificate:
    Free
    Level:
    Intermediate, needs Python
    Time:
3 to 4 hours per unit

The best free generative AI course with a free certificate for people who can code. It takes you from what agents are to building and deploying them with open-source frameworks. Hugging Face states the course and the certification process are completely free, with no deadline.

Two certificates: finish Unit 1 for a fundamentals certificate, or complete Unit 1, one use-case assignment and the final challenge for the certificate of completion.

The catch: you need basic Python and a basic idea of LLMs, and Hugging Face suggests about 3 to 4 hours of work per unit. Pair it with our step-by-step AI agent project to turn the course into a portfolio piece.

  4. 4. Microsoft Generative AI for Beginners

    Provider:
    Microsoft (GitHub)
    Price:
    Free
    Certificate:
    No
    Level:
    Beginner to intermediate
    Language:
    English plus translations incl. Hindi

The most thorough free generative AI curriculum here, and the answer to "generative AI for beginners Microsoft free course". It is an open-source course on GitHub with 21 lessons, split into "Learn" lessons on concepts and "Build" lessons with code in Python and TypeScript, covering prompting, chat and image apps, RAG, agents and responsible AI. Translations exist in many languages, including Hindi.

The catch: the repository mentions no certificate. Running the code also needs access to a model service such as Azure OpenAI, the OpenAI API, Microsoft Foundry Models or Foundry Local. For a Microsoft credential, see the Applied Skills note on our free AI courses with certificate page.

  5. 5. Anthropic Academy: Building with the Claude API

    Provider:
    Anthropic
    Price:
    Free
    Certificate:
    Free
    Level:
    Intermediate, needs Python

A free developer course from Anthropic that teaches how to integrate a large language model into an application through an API: sending requests, handling responses and building features on top. Registration is free and Anthropic Academy issues completion certificates. The academy also offers a free Introduction to Model Context Protocol course if you want to connect models to tools; our explainer on what MCP is covers the idea.

The catch: Anthropic lists Python and basic JSON handling as prerequisites, and the code targets Claude specifically. The underlying patterns, such as structured prompts and tool use, carry over to other LLM APIs.

  6. 6. NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute free generative AI courses

    Provider:
    NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute
    Price:
    Free (selected courses)
    Certificate:
    Some courses; check page
    Level:
    Beginner to intermediate
    Duration:
    2 to 8 hours

Matches the "generative AI course free with certificate NVIDIA" search, with one honest caveat. NVIDIA's self-paced training page lists Generative AI Explained (2 hours, free, no coding) and Building RAG Agents for LLMs (8 hours, free, using tools such as LangChain and LlamaIndex).

The certificate catch: NVIDIA says select courses offer a certificate of competency, and the course listing does not make clear which free ones include it. An NVIDIA forum answer says Generative AI Explained does not. Check the individual course page before you start if the certificate is your goal.

Who it suits: Generative AI Explained for managers and beginners; Building RAG Agents for developers who already know Python.

  7. 7. AWS Skill Builder generative AI courses

    Provider:
    Amazon Web Services
    Price:
    Free digital courses
    Certificate:
    Check course page
    Level:
    Beginner to intermediate

AWS says self-paced digital training on Skill Builder is free, and its generative AI catalogue includes Introduction to Generative AI: Art of the Possible, Essentials of Prompt Engineering, Foundations of Prompt Engineering, Amazon Bedrock Getting Started and Generative AI for Executives.

Who it suits: cloud and IT students, and anyone whose employer uses AWS, because examples centre on AWS services such as Amazon Bedrock. For a no-code taste, AWS also offers PartyRock, a free playground for building generative AI apps.

The certificate catch: we could not confirm on an official AWS page what credential the free courses give, so check each course listing. AWS Certification exams are separate and paid.

  8. 8. Hugging Face LLM Course

    Provider:
    Hugging Face
    Price:
    Free
    Certificate:
    No
    Level:
    Advanced, needs Python

The deepest free course on how large language models work under the hood, starting with Transformers and working with models through the Hugging Face libraries. Hugging Face describes it as completely free and without ads.

The catch: it currently has no certificate, according to the course FAQ, and it expects good Python knowledge, ideally after an introductory deep learning course. Take it when you want to understand transformer models and fine-tuning properly, for example before an ML engineer interview, not as a first course.

  9. 9. DeepLearning.AI short courses

    Provider:
    DeepLearning.AI
    Price:
    Videos free; Pro is paid
    Certificate:
    Paid (Pro membership)
    Level:
    Beginner to advanced

Short, focused courses on specific generative AI skills such as prompting, RAG, agents and fine-tuning. New topics appear quickly, which makes them useful for keeping up.

The certificate catch, stated plainly: DeepLearning.AI's own help page says free members can watch course videos but do not get assessments or certificates. Quizzes, interactive labs and certificates of completion need a paid Pro membership.

How to use it for free: watch the videos to learn a specific technique, then practise it in your own notebook. If you need a certificate, pick a free-certificate course from this list instead.

Which generative AI courses are free but charge for the certificate?

Several of the most searched "free" generative AI courses charge for the certificate. You can still learn from them free:

  • DeepLearning.AI: videos free, certificates need Pro.
  • Coursera and edX courses, including Google AI Essentials: free trial or audit, certificate on a paid plan unless you get financial aid.
  • Course marketplaces and edtech academies: platforms such as Udemy, Simplilearn and Great Learning list free generative AI courses, but certificate terms vary by course and plan. Great Learning's own page, for example, says unlimited certificates come with its paid Pro+ subscription.

The rule of thumb: if you cannot find the words "free certificate" or "no charge" on the official page, plan as if the certificate is paid. For exam-based credentials worth paying for, see our guide to AI certifications for beginners.

How do you turn a free generative AI course into a portfolio project?

Build one small project that uses what the course taught, then write it up in a short README with a demo. Three projects that map directly to the courses above:

  1. After Google or IBM courses: a prompt library for your own field, with ten tested prompts and notes on which failed and why.
  2. After Microsoft's or Hugging Face's courses: a document Q&A bot. Our RAG chatbot step-by-step build walks you through one in Python.
  3. After the Hugging Face Agents Course or Anthropic's API course: a small agent that uses one or two tools, following our AI agent project.

Then prepare to explain it. Interviewers for AI roles ask how your system handles wrong answers and private data. Our generative AI interview questions cover the usual ones.

How long does it take to learn generative AI for free?

Most beginners can understand generative AI well enough to use it confidently in two to four weeks, at 30 minutes a day, and build a first working app in another four weeks if they know some Python. A free plan that fits that pace:

  • Week 1: Google's Introduction to Generative AI and Introduction to Large Language Models.
  • Week 2: one IBM SkillsBuild credential on prompting, plus daily practice on your own tasks.
  • Weeks 3 to 4: the first lessons of Microsoft's Generative AI for Beginners, or Unit 1 of the Hugging Face Agents Course for its fundamentals certificate.
  • Weeks 5 to 8: build and write up one project from the list above.

Learning in short daily sessions works better than weekend marathons, because you test each idea on real tasks while it is fresh.
