The best AI certifications for beginners are AWS Certified AI Practitioner, Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals and Google Cloud Generative AI Leader, all with paid proctored exams. For free credentials, choose IBM SkillsBuild's AI Fundamentals badge, Elements of AI, the Government of India's YUVA AI for All or Anthropic's AI Fluency certificate.
"AI certification" can mean three very different things: a proctored exam from a cloud company, a certificate of completion from a course, or a digital badge. They are not worth the same, and they do not cost the same. Most beginner lists mix them together, which is how people end up paying for a certificate nobody recognises.
This list separates them. We checked each official page for what the credential proves, whether it is free, how you earn it and who it suits. If you are completely new, our what is AI explainer and the free AI course for beginners path are a good warm-up before any exam.
What is an AI certification?
An AI certification is a credential that shows you have passed an assessment of AI knowledge set by a recognised organisation. For beginners, credentials fall into three types:
Type
How you earn it
Typical cost
Weight with employers
Professional certification (AWS, Microsoft, Google Cloud)
Proctored exam, online or at a test centre
Paid exam
Highest, especially for cloud and IT roles
Course certificate (Coursera, NPTEL, Elements of AI)
Finish lessons and graded quizzes or an exam
Free to paid
Medium; depends on the institution
Digital badge (IBM SkillsBuild, Microsoft Learn)
Pass online assessments
Usually free
Lower, but easy to verify on LinkedIn
A certification usually has a validity period and an ID that employers can verify. A course certificate shows you completed a course. Both are useful; just know which one you are buying.
Which AI certification is best for beginners?
The best AI certification depends on the job you want:
IT, cloud or developer roles: AWS Certified AI Practitioner or Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals. Pick the cloud your target companies use; many Indian service companies work with both.
Business, sales, consulting or management roles: Google Cloud Generative AI Leader, which Google says is for any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience.
Students on a zero budget: IBM SkillsBuild's AI Fundamentals badge, Elements of AI, YUVA AI for All or Anthropic's AI Fluency certificate.
College credit or a recognised Indian credential: an NPTEL course from an IIT or IISc, which many colleges accept for credit transfer under their own rules.
If you are unsure, start with one free credential to learn the basics of generative AI and large language models. Take a paid exam only once you know which cloud or role you are aiming for.
The best AI certifications for beginners in 2026
We chose credentials from well-known providers that a beginner can realistically pass. For each one we checked the official page on 6 October 2026 for the exam or course, whether it is free, how you earn the credential and the languages offered. Exam fees vary by country and change often, so we do not quote them: check the official page before you book.
1. AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01)
Provider:
Amazon Web Services
Price:
Paid exam, free prep
Certificate:
Paid
Level:
Foundational
Duration:
90-minute exam
AWS's foundational AI exam tests AI and machine learning concepts, generative AI, and how AWS services support them. The official page lists 65 questions in 90 minutes, and the certification is valid for three years.
Who it suits: freshers and IT professionals aiming at cloud, support, pre-sales or junior AI roles, especially at companies that run on AWS.
The catch: it is a paid exam and does not test hands-on building. AWS offers free preparation on AWS Skill Builder, including an exam prep plan and an official practice question set. Hindi is not among the listed exam languages.
2. Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals (exam AI-901)
Provider:
Microsoft
Price:
Paid exam
Certificate:
Paid
Level:
Fundamentals, some Python
Language:
English and 12 others
Azure AI Fundamentals is Microsoft's entry-level AI certification. The official page now lists AI-901 as the required exam, covering AI concepts and capabilities and building AI solutions with Microsoft Foundry. If you have seen guides to AI-900, check the official page, because AI-900 is no longer listed for this certification.
Who it suits: students and early-career developers who want a Microsoft credential and plan to work with Azure.
The catch: the new exam is more technical than older versions. Microsoft says candidates need knowledge of Python syntax and familiarity with Azure resources. The exam is paid, priced by country, and a free practice assessment is available.
Google Cloud's Generative AI Leader certification is aimed at people who need to understand and lead generative AI work rather than code it. Google lists no prerequisites and says it suits anyone in any job role. The exam is 90 minutes with 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions, and the certification is valid for three years.
Who it suits: MBA students, managers, consultants, sales and business analysts who want a recognised generative AI credential without programming.
The catch: it is a paid exam, offered in English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese. Google provides a free learning path, study guide and exam guide to prepare.
Google AI Essentials is a short, practical course on using generative AI tools for everyday work, responsible AI and writing good prompts. Coursera lists it as under 10 hours, and you earn a certificate from Google when you complete it.
Who it suits: non-technical professionals and students who want a recognised name on a course certificate and prefer learning by doing rather than exam preparation.
The catch: it is a course certificate, not a proctored certification, and it is not free. You pay a Coursera subscription after a 7-day free trial, with financial aid available. Coursera says it is currently available in English, with more languages coming.
5. IBM SkillsBuild Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals
Provider:
IBM SkillsBuild
Price:
Free
Certificate:
Free digital badge
Level:
Intermediate (per Credly)
Language:
English
IBM's free AI Fundamentals credential covers machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, chatbots, neural networks and AI ethics, with hands-on work in IBM Watson Studio. You earn a digital badge on Credly after completing the course series, graded quizzes, assessments and practice simulations.
Who it suits: students who want a free, verifiable badge from a major tech company to show on LinkedIn.
The catch: it is a digital badge rather than a proctored certification, so it carries less weight than a cloud exam. You must register on IBM SkillsBuild, which has separate tracks for adult learners aged 18 and over and for high school students.
6. Elements of AI (University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn)
Provider:
University of Helsinki, MinnaLearn
Price:
Free
Certificate:
Free (Introduction to AI)
Level:
Beginner, no coding
Language:
English and many others
Elements of AI is a free online introduction to AI for non-experts, and its Introduction to AI course needs no complicated maths or programming. The official FAQ confirms the Introduction to AI certificate is free of charge once you pass, including the required peer reviews.
Who it suits: complete beginners from any background, including commerce and arts students, who want a free certificate from a respected university course.
The catch: the follow-on Building AI course is free to study but its shareable certificate is paid. Hindi is not among the listed languages, though many others are.
YUVA AI for All is a free course from the Government of India's IndiaAI Mission. Its six modules cover the foundations, applications, ethics and future of AI, including effective prompting with Indian examples. The government's own material describes about 4.5 hours of learning and a government certificate on completion, earned on FutureSkills Prime.
Who it suits: school leavers, college students and working adults in India who want a free, government-issued certificate as a first credential.
The catch: it is an AI literacy course, not a technical certification, so it will not prove you can build AI systems. Treat it as a strong first step, not the finish line.
NPTEL, run by the IITs and IISc and offered on SWAYAM, has free AI and machine learning courses taught by faculty, in 4, 8 and 12-week formats. To get certified, you join the course, submit weekly assignments, register and pay for the exam, and write a proctored exam in person at a centre.
Who it suits: Indian engineering and science students who want an IIT-backed credential, and whose colleges may accept NPTEL for credit transfer.
The catch: courses follow a semester schedule, so you cannot start any day. Some AI courses need maths and programming. The certificate needs a paid exam, so check the fee on NPTEL before you register.
9. AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations (Anthropic)
Provider:
Anthropic
Price:
Free
Certificate:
Free
Level:
Beginner
Language:
English
Anthropic's free course teaches how to work with AI well: when to delegate a task, how to describe it through good prompting, how to judge the output and how to use AI responsibly. After the lessons you take a final assessment and receive a certificate of completion.
Who it suits: students and professionals who use AI assistants daily and want a free certificate tied to a practical skill employers now ask about.
The catch: it is a course certificate from an AI company, not an industry exam, and it focuses on using AI, not building it. Pair it with a cloud certification if you are aiming at technical roles.
Andrew Ng's AI For Everyone is a classic non-technical introduction to what AI can and cannot do, how AI projects work and how organisations adopt AI. Coursera lists it as beginner level, about seven hours, taught in English with subtitles in many languages.
Who it suits: managers, founders and students from non-technical streams who want a clear mental model of AI before choosing a technical path.
The catch: you can audit it for free, but the certificate requires payment, with financial aid available. It predates much of today's generative AI, so add a newer generative AI course afterwards.
An AI certification is worth it when it matches the job you are applying for and you combine it with something you have built. A cloud AI certification helps you clear resume filters for IT and cloud roles. A free certificate shows initiative on a fresher's resume. Neither replaces the ability to explain your work in an interview.
A certification is most worth it if:
Job posts you are targeting name it, which is common for AWS and Microsoft credentials in IT services.
You are switching fields and need proof that you studied AI properly.
Your employer pays for the exam or rewards certifications in appraisals.
AI certifications range from free to a paid exam fee. Free options include IBM SkillsBuild badges, the Elements of AI certificate, YUVA AI for All and Anthropic's AI Fluency certificate. AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud charge an exam fee that depends on your country and changes over time, so always check the official exam page for the current price in India.
Ways to cut the cost:
Use the free preparation. All three cloud providers publish free learning paths, study guides or practice questions.
Ask your college or employer. Many campus programmes and companies sponsor exam vouchers.
Apply for financial aid on Coursera if you want a paid course certificate such as Google AI Essentials.
Avoid unknown "certified AI expert" programmes that charge high fees for a PDF from a company nobody has heard of.
How should a beginner prepare for an AI certification exam?
Most beginners can prepare for a foundational AI exam in three to five weeks at about an hour a day. A simple plan:
Week 2: work through the provider's free official learning path, taking notes on its services and terms.
Week 3: take the official practice questions, and study every question you got wrong.
Week 4: build one tiny project on that platform, such as a chatbot or a text classifier, so the services stop being abstract.
Book the exam only when you score well on practice tests. Keep your notes: they become your interview preparation later.
